What to Eat, Do and See: A Da Lat Travel Itinerary

Da Lat cuisine - more than just snacks

Da Lat's cool climate gives its food a character of its own: warm, hearty, and often paired with excellent local vegetables. A walk through the night market or the small streets around Xuan Huong Lake in the evening quickly turns up a string of dishes locals consider uniquely Da Lat.

Dishes worth trying

  • Grilled rice paper ("banh trang nuong") - nicknamed "Da Lat pizza," a crispy rice-paper base topped with egg, scallions, sausage or dried shrimp, grilled over hot coals.
  • Chicken hotpot with wild basil leaf ("lau ga la e") - a lightly sour broth fragrant with local basil leaves, perfect for a cold evening.
  • Steamed rice rolls with chicken giblets ("banh uot long ga") - soft rice rolls served with chicken innards and a sweet-sour fish sauce, a favorite local breakfast.
  • Hot soy milk and sizzling mini pancakes ("banh can") - a classic evening snack around the market area.
  • Avocado ice cream, fresh strawberries, jams and artichoke tea - great to try on the spot and easy to bring home as gifts.

A cozy cafe in Da Lat, a popular spot for travelers to rest and warm up

Beyond street food, Da Lat is also known for its distinctive cafe culture. Many cafes are built like greenhouses set among tea hills or flower gardens, perfect for lingering over a coffee while taking in the view - especially early in the morning when mist still drapes the hillsides.

Things to do in Da Lat

Besides sightseeing, Da Lat offers plenty of activities depending on what you're after. For active groups, canyoning down waterfalls, kayaking on Tuyen Lam Lake, or cycling along the hill roads are all popular picks. Families with young kids often prefer the gentler pace of vegetable, flower or strawberry farms, where you can walk through the fields, pick fruit and take photos safely. In the evening, strolling around Da Lat Market, grabbing a sidewalk coffee, or sampling the night-time street food is practically a required part of any trip.

Suggested 3-day, 2-night itinerary

Day 1: City center and the classics

Spend the morning walking around Xuan Huong Lake, then stop by Da Lat Market for breakfast and a bag of dried fruit. In the afternoon, head to the City Flower Garden or Valley of Love for photos. In the evening, return to the night market to try grilled rice paper and other snacks, with street music if you're visiting during peak season.

Day 2: Nature and outdoor experiences

Devote the morning to a waterfall such as Datanla, adding the slide ride if you're up for it. In the afternoon, head to the pine hills or Tuyen Lam Lake for kayaking or a scenic boat ride. In the evening, warm up with a bowl of chicken hotpot with wild basil after a day of moving around.

Day 3: Culture and last-minute shopping

In the morning, visit Bao Dai Palace or the Crazy House to take in the architecture, then stop at a strawberry farm or flower farm near the center. Have a light lunch, then spend the afternoon picking up gifts - jam, artichoke tea, coffee - before heading to the airport or bus station.

A few small tips

  • Feel free to rearrange this itinerary depending on how long you're staying and your own interests.
  • Book accommodation and any activities in advance during peak season, as things can fill up fast.
  • Wear sturdy shoes if you plan to visit waterfalls or walk a lot on the hills.
  • Prices for services and entrance tickets can change over time, so confirm current rates when booking or on arrival.

Da Lat suits all kinds of travel styles, from slow, photo-filled relaxation to more active outdoor adventures. In just three days and two nights you can already experience much of what makes this city special - and you'll likely find yourself wanting to come back in a different season to see even more.
